GI (Geographical Indication) is a sign used on a product that has a specific geographical origin and possess the qualities or reputation that are due to that origin.

Geographical Indication (GI) is a sign used on products to indicate its specific geographical region of Origin and its unique qualities imparted from that geographical region.

The Indian Parliament passed Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act in December 1999 for providing registration and protection of GI products in India. This act came into force with effect from 15 September 2003.
The Act is administered by the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks, who is also the Registrar of Geographical Indications.

Products that indicate a unique quality obtained from a specific region due to traditional practices, vegetation, topography are called as GI Products. These products cannot be replicated anywhere else in the world with the exact uniqueness and specialties.

Geographical Indication Tag is conferred for Agricultural Products, Handlooms & Textiles, Foodstuffs, Wine and Spirit, Handicrafts.
