Machilipatnam Kalamkari

Showcasing ‘Kalamkari’, an elegant artistry from the small village of Pedana near the coastal town of Andhra Pradesh, Machilipatnam. The origin of artwork dates back to the 11th century. They are in two forms of Kalamkari Art, The hand block print of Machilipatnam and the pen work of Srikalahasti.

 

The Machilipatnam artwork uses hand blocks made of wood for printing and natural vegetable colours are procured from tree barks, flowers and plant roots and are processed into uncomplicated, simple colours. Hence they are more common in rustic,  earthen shades. The craft is utilized widely for wall decoratives, upholstery, mats, carpets, table and bed linens, men and women wear and accessories like scarfs, bag, stoles and much more.
