Cheriyal Scroll Painting
Origin
The present-day Artform can be traced back to disintegration of the great Vijayanagar empire resulting in Migration of the Artists & settling down in the present Cheriyal Village, in Siddipet district, Telangana. Initially the Artform was known as Nakashi paintings, Naksha (meaning fine line) and the artist were called as Nakshas. Today the paintings are identified with the region, hence the Name Cheriyal Painting.
The Purpose
Originally the Artform used to be drawn on Kadhi cloth in form of panels one below the other, & typically a scroll would consist of at least 50 panels. With the advancement of Mobile & Television, the Scroll paintings have lost their true purpose.
