Kamalapur Red Banana is specifically grown in and surrounding areas of Kamalapur Village, in the Gulbarga district of Karnataka, India. It is nicknamed as a “rich man’s fruit” because it is sold at a higher price as compared to the other varieties of banana because of greater inputs in farming with fertilizer, water, and workforce. Its skin is red colored and the pulp is creamish in color with a delightful taste. It has a high-calorie value with Vitamin C and B6, which makes it a healthy food.
This agricultural product is protected under the Geographical Indications of Goods Act (GI Act) 1999 of the Government of India and it was registered by the Controller General of Patents Designs and Trademarks under the title of “Kamalapur Red Banana” and recorded at GI Application Number 133 under Class 31 as a Horticulture item. Considering its GI identity, genetic engineering tests are not allowed to be done on this banana, and it is entirely the property of the Kamalapur farming community.
Planting of Kamalapur Banana is done during August or September, and before planting, the suckers are dipped in cow dung water overnight to prevent any diseases to the plant. Desuckering operation is carried out at an interval of 45 days and the total time is taken from planting to harvesting is about 18 months and there are no “pre or post-harvesting approaches” for its conservation. However, the bunches are kept in airtight chambers with incense burning to encourage the fruit to ripen early.
Nutritional Properties
The nutritional status of the fruits has been tested at the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), which demonstrates that the fruit has a composition of calcium, iron, potassium, and fiber which is much superior to that of other banana types. Its calorie content is high with Vitamin C and B6.
The Department of Forestry and Environmental Science of the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore regulates the quality standards of Kamalapur Banana.
Note: Normal Yellow Banana contains only 7% of Calcium whereas Kamalapur Red Banana Contains 59% of calcium and high content of Iron, a magical fruit for the Pregnant Women.
