Origin
It is said that the Rulers of Vijayanagar Empire invited artisans from across India to their Capital Hampi, thus began an unique art form of Handmade & Hand painted Wooden Toys, today famously known after the Town, Kinhal where the craft form is kept alive.
The Process : Kinhal Craft
1.Raw Material: Soft Wood (Hale Wood) & Hard Wood (Polki Marra).
2.Joining Parts: Paste made of Tamarind seeds & Pebbles.
3.Body Paste: Kitta, made from Jute Rags, soaked, dried & Powdered, mixed with Saw dust & Tamarind seed Paste is applied all over the body after joing the Parts.
4.Embossing : A mixture of Pebble powder paste + liquid gum for Ornamentations.
5.Paint : Both Natural & Synthetic.
Theme
Kinnal Craft mostly depicts Religious Themes & Characters and draws its inspiration from Mural of Lepakshi Temple in Andhra & Pampapathi(Virupaksha)temple at Hampi.

In 2022, 75th Republic Day, the state of Karnataka displayed a tableau themed on Kinhal Craft.
Kinhal Toys has been Conferred with the Geographical Indication (GI) in 2012 with GI Number 165.
