GI (Geographical Indication) is a sign used on a product that has a specific geographical origin and possess the qualities or reputation that are due to that origin.
The GI Tag is given to ensure that none except those who are registered as authorized users allowed to use the popular product name.
The Indian Parliament passed the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection Act) in December 1999, which aimed at providing a registration and also protection of GI of the goods in India. This act came into force with effect from 15 September 2003.
This Act is administered by the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks, who is also the Registrar of Geographical Indications.
GI Products are the products that obtain the qualities from their original geographical place of production. The qualities, characteristics or reputation of the product should be essentially due to the place of origin only.
Karnataka has the highest number of GI Tagged Products.
