Origin

Maharani Ahilyabai, the Brave Maratha Warrior Queen, established Maheshwar as the seat of the Holkar Dynasty. It is under her reign, the Handloom sector found impetus and Maheswar Fabrics found Royal patronage. Maheshwar Fabrics contains Geometrical designs on its border and are inspired from Paintings & Carvings engraved on the Fort walls at Maheshwar built by Maharani Ahilyabai in l8th Century.

Region

Maheshwar was originally known as Mahishmati, the ancient city that found mention in the great epic Ramanaya. Maheshwar Handloom are produced on the Two sides of holy river Narmada whose geographical area now falls within the limits of Maheshwar and Kasrawad talukas. The weavers carrying the production are based only in Maheshwar and Kasrawad Talukas. The art of weaving the sarees is passed on for generations signifying excellent Craftsmanship.

Loom

The looms used for weaving Maheshwar fabrics is exclusive to Maheshwar cluster & are known as ‘Double Box Slay’ looms. These kinds of looms are not used in any other handloom clusters in India, thus making Maheshwar Fabrics one of its Kind.
