About Moirang Phee:

Moirang is a name of historical place under Bishnupur District of Manipur State and the land of legendary hero “Khamba” in the epic of Moirang Kangleirol.

The Moirang Phee is a name of the fabric originated from the Moirang with the Moirang Pheejin design of weft threads interlocked with weft threads of main body during the weaving process. The fabric is heavily inspired by the flora and fauna surrounding the region. The craft is woven with the cultural and religious beliefs of the natives of Manipur since time immemorial.Moirang is a name of historical place under Bishnupur District of Manipur State and the land of legendary hero “Khamba” in the epic of Moirang Kangleirol.

Design: The Moirang Pheejin design is woven sequentially on both longitudinal edges of the fabric and oriented towards the center of the cloth, with cotton or silk threads.

The design represents the shape of thin and pointed teeth of the “Pakhangba”, the Pythonic God of the Manipur mythology.

Colors: Colors are obtained from natural sources.

Process:

The fiber used to make the yarn is derived from “lashing” (cotton ball), “labrang” (mulberry silk) and extracted from the bark of trees locally known as “santhak”. This local fiber is spun into threads and then dyed using plants and bark. Rice starch is applied for sizing and then stretched across a bamboo rod and wound into a bobbin. The fabric is woven in two stages using a loin loom or a throw shuttle and a fly-shuttle loom. No other silk could boast of such an organic process to go from cocoon to cloth.

Moirang Phee has been Conferred with the Geographical Indication (GI) status by the Government of India in 2011 with GI Number 372.
