Brass oil lamps of Nachiarkoil

The Craft of making the Brass Oil Lamps at Nachiarkoil dates back to 1857 and is famously known as Temple Lamps of South India for its craftsmanship that adds a sense of purity to the ambience.

The lamp consists of four parts, viz

  • Base (Keezh-bagam),
  • Stem (kandam),
  • Oil container (Thanguli) with V shaped spouts to hold the wicks and
  • Apex (Prabai).

The uniqueness of the craft is attributed to the locally available sand which is used for mounding and casting and is said to be the best in all of south India.
