GI Tag is a sign used on products to indicate its specific geographical region of Origin and its unique qualities imparted from that geographical region.
The GI Tag is given to safeguard customers from bogus and deceptive products being sold of having a specific geographical origin and quality even when it is made elsewhere or lack the quality. The GI Tag ensures Authenticity and provides Imprisonment for a term of 6 months that may be extended to 2 years and a minimum fine of Rs 50,000 that may be extended to Rs 2,00,000 for selling bogus and deceptive GI Tagged products.
The Indian Parliament passed Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act in December 1999 for providing registration and protection of GI products in India. This act came into force with effect from 15 September 2003.
The Act is administered by the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks, who is also the Registrar of Geographical Indications.
Products that indicate a unique quality obtained from a specific region due to traditional practices, vegetation, topography are called as GI Products. These products cannot be replicated anywhere else in the world with the exact uniqueness and specialties.
