Farrukhabad Prints has been Conferred with the Geographical Indication (GI) Status by Government of India in 2013 with the GI Number 191.About Farrukhabad Prints:
Farrukhabad, one of the great printing centers in India has been an age old traditional block making and block printing center for ages.
The printing on cotton and silk is done by hand, the pattern first being carved on blocks of wood and then stamped on the cloth. The method of printing is based on the stencil approach.
The designs and patterns range from the classical Buttis (Polka dots) to the famous ‘Tree of Life’. Both have their distinct influence and harmony. The tree of life is the main characteristic of this artistic work, which is composed of about a hundred blocks.
Earlier, potatoes were used as blocks for printing with vegetable and natural dyes. Later Potato was replaced by wood stencil. This method insured longer durability of the engraved piece and hence it was easier to replicate the same design on a large quantity of fabric.
