Kosa Tussar Silk Saree

Kosa, also known as Champa Silk or Tussar silk, is a unique Silk Variety obtained from the Cocoons of the Wild silkworm called “Antheraea Mylitta”, which are truly rare. These worms can only be found in Arjun, Sal and Sajal trees in the dense forests of Janjgir-Champa District of Chhattisgarh.

The Local Tribals collect the cocoons from the forests in a traditional manner. The cocoon’s natural Cream and Golden-Brown colour further enhances the luster and shade of Kosa silk.

Period of Origin

The Tradition of Kosa Silk is as old as Vedic era and has been in narration among Dewangan community, one of the World’s oldest weaving communities. According to the ancient folklore, the first Kosa silk saree was made for Goddess Durga, who helped the Dewangan community by killing the demon “Maisasur” and is believed that, the first Loom was prepared by Vishwakarma from the remains of the Demon.

According to another belief, it is said that, When Ravana took away Sita in Pushpaka Vimana (flying Shuttle), a small gathering of Dewangans sighting the same, were so distracted and disturbed that they broke many silk yarns.

Upon Sri Rama visiting the place, blessed and assured the weavers that, whenever the threads are twisted with Ash and water it shall never break again. Since then, the Dewangan community have been joining the broken Yarn this way.
