About the Craft
The Antiquity of Indian metal sculptures dates back to 360 A.D. In Orissa, the Bell Metal craft reached its zenith under the royal patronage of the Ganga rulers from 11th century onwards.
The Artisan Community
The metal craftsmen of Odisha are known as Kansari, a word derived from Sanskrit, Kansya = bell metal, Kara = worker. The techno-complexity of the craft practiced by the Kansari is intricately Inter woven with the Ecology, Economy, Social and Ritual aspects of the region.
Metals
Brass: Is an Alloy of Copper and Zinc. Tensile strength is poor Copper, addition of Zinc increases the Tensile strength.
Bronze (Bell Metal): Is an Alloy of Copper and Tin. Tin is known to retain the polish and provide a bright finish.
Technique
There are basically three techniques of making a Brass Product, a) Constant Beating b) By Joining Sheet Metals and c) By casting process.
History
In 2nd Century BC Ayurvedic physician Charaka has stated that, eating and cooking in Kansa utensils made with the correct ratio of copper and tin, balances the body’s pH level.
In Sanskrit the phrase, “Kansyam Buddhivardhakam”, refers to the belief that Kansa sharpens our intellect and calms our minds.
