The art of Paithan is more than 2000 years old, developed in the splendid ancient city of Pratishthan ruled by the legendary Satavahanas ruler Shalivahana.
Patronized By King Shalivahana King Shalivahana encouraged the craft of Paithani Weaving to the extent that it eventually led to a global recognition. The Saree woven with this specific technique have been known with the present name 'Paithani' for last 600 years. Earlier the saree was known with different names such as Pitamber, Malgunthi, and Mahavastra Interlocking Technique: The specialty of the Paithani sarees lies in their extra-weft mechanism of embroidery, wherein the weaver uses a separate bamboo spindle for each colour in the motif, without the use of any mechanical contrivance like a jacquard or Jala to aid in formulating the designs.
