Santiniketan Leather Goods were first produced in Bichitra Studio, a place of making crafts at Santiniketan in 1932 under the guidance of Rabindranath Tagore’s son, Rathindranath & his wife Protima Devi.
The production and manufacture of Santiniketan Leather Goods was subsequently developed by stalwarts like Nandalal Bose, Suren Kar & Ramkinkar Beji with their innovative ideas and designs.
The Leather
The leather used is Vegetable tanned Goat & Sheep leather commonly known as East India Leather. The vegetable tanned leather exhibits unique property of permanently retaining the embossed imprints and gives a glossy effect when rubbed on smooth glass surface adding to the exclusive appearance.
