Anjana Charita by Sisu Mayana (1300 BC) mention Solders of Sri Krishna from Dwarika who on landing in a marshy place came across a mixed garden of Coconut and Areca Nut and drank coconut water and Chewed Ripe Areca nut.
Raghuvamsha by Kalidasa (4 A.D) mentions, Shri Rama telling his consort Sitadevi of the rich and artistically laid out and abundantly bearing areca nut plantations on the West coast of India (Present Sirsi).
Production
Areca nut grown in cagadala soil attains pre bearing age between 8 – 10 years, full crop at fifteen and continuous in perfection for thirty years. It is also called Brahmavraksha which is also used for giving Dakshina to pujans. It is also used in puja ceremony.
Interesting Fact: Gode (1961) on the strength of literacy sources mentioned that, the history of chewing Betel Nut among Aryans in India is an habit of last 2000 years.
